About Hell's Kitchen

AMAZIN' Hazen of Hell's Kitchen NYC Skyline

Hazen has always loved and BELIEVES in fairies (though spelled "faerie") and specific other "wee folk" (leprechauns, imps & ogres).

In both the spring and summer of 2006, we would go on leprechaun hunts in a special field in Central Park. We would do this often and many times spend hours both actively hunting & seeking and other times quietly watching and waiting. Hazen would create elaborate traps (sometimes with bait) that were constructed to capture the leprechaun so that we could observe him and talk to him and then of course, let him go. He would also do this in rural eastern Pennsylvania with faeries as well.

In August of 2006, the three of us went to Michigan to see our family (first time we were able to travel there in two years). While visiting his favorite aunt (Aunt Beth) Hazen discovered a couple of really cool things in her town. Mysteriously, there were a couple of little doors that just existed by themselves in the downtown area. Hazen and his Aunt Beth concluded that they were faerie doors. Hazen absolutely loved these and talked about them all the time when back in New York.

In the last week of October, Aunt Beth came to visit us all in New York. Hazen was not doing so well physically. His Aunt Beth stayed with us for 5 days, mostly staying right beside Hazen, where he was on our special couch at home, very physically weak, as Suzan and I were madly trying to save his life ourselves "as doctors" giving him all kinds of treatment to try to stabilize and heal his failing liver. Hazen and Aunt Beth were able to talk some, and read some books at this time. Hazen asked to draft a letter and asked if Aunt Beth would write his words for him. He composed a letter to the faeries in Michigan (the ones who had the doors), asking them in a persuasive and articulate way if they would come or move to New York City. He even gave "selling points" highlighting the "benefits" of residing in Manhattan. (that is purely Hazen's style, he is a born and excellent salesman and persuader) He said that he would build Doors for them here in New York City so that they would have a home in the big city.

On November 1, Hazen left us. As stated in the previous email, we wanted to do something of a legacy for him that would serve all children and child-like adults for future generations, with all the love and support that people provided in the form of donations. We had no idea what it was at the time, this form of the legacy, but we knew that it already existed and would be purely Hazen. Just a few days later we were able to crystallize this vision.

We will fulfill Hazen's strong and last desire to bring the faeries to New York City. We will create the faerie doors throughout the city. Here is how it will work in a nutshell.

We will create a certain number of Faerie Doors here in Manhattan (at least 11 with no particular upper limit). Each door will be completely different and unique. Each door will be for a certain type of faerie. We are creating each type of faerie ourselves (each represents a special and unique component of Hazen's character and essence). Each faerie has its own profile, background, personality, and physical picture, and thus its own life. Each Faerie Door will completely different and exist in various locations all over New York City. Each door will have a description with it of the faerie who will reside in or near it and other special surprises.

The Program- these doors will all be connected in a special way. People will randomly encounter them here in NYC, but will know that others exist...and will intuitively know to find more. We will help them with special clues. They will be moved to find or "hunt" all of the faerie doors throughout the city. In doing so, they will go on a sort of special hunt (think treasure or scavenger hunt) which will be a whole journey or pilgrimage in itself. They will also learn about the faeries, the significance of the location of the doors, learn about themselves, and have a lot of fun and mystery. Hazen also absolutely loves hunts (treasure, scavenger and faerie of course) and we would do them almost every day at home (with home made maps and clues etc.) and did absolutely every day when he was inpatient in the hospital throughout the corridors.

The point for the children or adults who encounter them, will be to subtly and mysteriously empower them to open up their minds, and believe in the magic of childhood, of wonder, to have faith in something that you can't always see but can feel in your heart, to go on a special and unique journey, to learn about the special and magical places in New York that many would never see, to learn about themselves, a special experience that they can share with their children or other friends much like this amazing special experiences we had with Hazen.

A great, eclectic group of people will work on this - architects, artists, designers, construction people, other children, Suzan and I, etc.

It will be accessible for ALL people and will serve all people. We will have an accompanying website that will complement the physical form so that new people can learn about it, and others who have experienced it can stay with it. We will keep the physical form and the website very dynamic so that it is constantly evolving and changing. Some of the doors may move at various times, and the clues will change regularly so that people can go back to it time and time again.

I know this is somewhat hard to explain and possibly conceptualize but here it is. We think this entity will be simply called "Hazen's Faerie Doors". This both fulfills a wish, creates a legacy, continues Hazen's work, exemplifies him, and will spread his amazing spirit even more out into the world for people to enjoy for, we hope, hundreds and thousands of years.
