![]() Suzan, Scott, and Hazen live in New York City as a family with the last name Kennedy. We reside in a typical New York domicile - a small one-bedroom apartment within a 5-floor walkup tenement building - a cozy place short on space and tall on rent. We both journeyed to NY, NY to follow our dreams, coming from the same hometown of Detroit, MI and meeting in Hell's Kitchen only 9 days before the new millennium. We were married on Bastille Day in 2000. Suzan has lived in Hell's Kitchen since 1997, Scott since 1999, and Hazen joined us in 2001. Hazen pays NO rent and is a lucky New Yorker. The three of us love our life in the city and that's why we live like 19th century immigrants to the new world - (read: cramped quarters). What we like to do: explore Manhattan, socialize with our diverse friends of all ages, frolic in playgrounds and parks (Central Park is our favorite), regularly patronize museums (#1 The Met, #2 Natural History, #3 Children's Museum of Manhattan), go to free stuff outside, hear music at Lincoln Center & Carnegie Hall ($5.00 kid's concerts), travel the streets for miles on foot/in stroller & talk, and just be together. We haven't owned a car in 6 years and love it!
Hazen is a great little boy who both possesses and displays a wonderful creative energy and imagination. An old soul with rich character, he is the magic in our life. He attends school at the 43rd Street Kids Preschool, a wonderful parent cooperative preschool in Hell's Kitchen - he started at age 1 and continued through this school year. Hazen loves his classmates and teachers and can walk to school in less than 5 minutes.
Hazen is very socially and physically active. He has spoken of "best friends" and "girlfriends" since he has been able to verbalize. At a young age, he developed a BIG heart, as we have seen it both break - and - emanate love. He values companionship and is a loyal friend. A thrill seeker, he particularly enjoys extreme playground stunts, chase games, screaming for joy, hide-and-seek, a game called "piledriver", leaping off high things, saying fun words like "cokka-wokka" and "eyeball", and belly-laughing. He loves Peter Pan! One time he ran with his mom for 2 miles in Central Park without stopping. He has also had?his two front-teeth pulled without real anesthesia; his nose broken on the playground followed by reconstructive surgery; his hand stuck behind an elevator door for 5 minutes followed by an ambulance ride and FDNY.... all within the first 3 years of his life. Thus, the poet/boxer. We all enjoy just having fun and experiencing life together. One day in November of 2004, the preschool called and said Hazen was probably not feeling well as he was not being very social or physical. We took him to the pediatrician that day and the verdict was that he was constipated (it had been 5 days since he had a BM). The remedy was to give him a Children's Fleet enema that night. Talk about a squirming little piglet. We corralled him and inserted and?Well, it didn't work- no BM. The next morning, November 18, 2004, we called the pediatrician back and she told us to bring him in for a colonic. The colonic would effectively clean his bowels out and we would implement the prunes, fiber, grains routine to keep him regular going forward. The doctor told us to go to her affiliate hospital for the colonic, Mt. Sinai, because they didn't give colonics in their office (only in LA). We all met at noon at the hospital for the "clean out", estimated to be an hour and then back home. Before the poopy procedure, one of the doctors asked about Hazen's slightly big tummy and a bruise on his leg. As a background, Hazen has always had a "middle-aged man's belly" as do many boys and girls throughout childhood. We even asked our pediatricians about it before and they dismissed it as a "normal kid thing". Bruises on the legs? All active kids have them. The doctor collected some urine and blood samples before the colonic which didn't even make us bat an eye. Some time later, a man in a while coat came by and said with piercing eyes, "your son has cancer". We both died inside right there. Soon...a few days laterEe came back to life. From that very moment on November 18, we all stayed together in a hospital for 54 straight days and nights (only going home 1 time for a few minutes). You see, we like to do things together. We have been saved by medical professionals, friends & family, love and prayer. Our story continues...
